You may have read articles about business leaders such as Richard Branson, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates habitually taking time away from work to think and reflect. These successful people truly value having quality time to think.
For many, the act of thinking is an underdeveloped skill. I’m not talking about daydreaming, fantasising or obsessing about things, but rather thinking seriously, or critical thinking. I am talking about using your mind effectively, asking yourself powerful questions, and challenging yourself to decide on a course of action or make a decision. Critical thinking is usually result oriented, highly productive, and uses a structured approach to help you think deeper and arrive at better solutions.
How about you? Do you schedule time to really think about the important things in your life? Your summer holiday is a great opportunity to think seriously about yourself, the life you are living and the year ahead you choose for yourself.
The break from everyday work pressures provides you with time, a fresh perspective and the motivation to focus and assess the choices you make in an objective way.
Here is the holiday homework that will change your life:
Whether you’re lying on your sun lounger, walking the coastal path, or on a flight, take time to slow down, disconnect from everything else and really use this time to do some serious thinking about your life, asking yourself the following questions:
Do I have a clear vision of the life I want to lead? If not, clarify what your values are and develop a motivating vision for the life you do want.
Am I usually filled with energy and motivation? Or do I often feel tired, trapped and stuck in a rut? What actions do I need to take to get out of the rut and live a life in line with my vision and values? When am I going to take them?
What’s holding me back from achieving the life I want, and how am I going to deal with whatever it is?
Make 2018 the year when you commit to think deeply, take action, move forward and achieve a more rewarding and fulfilling life.
Thinking can be done alone, with a thinking partner, or with a trained coach who will be fully present, listen attentively and ask some powerful questions.
